"Captain Miller, you are being charged with eight counts of murder. You do understand the seriousness of this, don't you?" Lt. Commander Harmon Rabb repeated for what had to be the hundredth time.
Miller sat impassively. All he had said thus far was his team leader was aware of where he was. Harm nearly growled when Miller once again pulled his pager from his pocket and began fiddling with it. This time he sighed when he looked at the pager before he began tossing it up and catching it. And how the man was allowed to keep his pager while in lock up was baffling.
"Of course I do,"
Finally he speaks.
"Then you've got to help me here. I am supposed to be in charge of your defense."
"There's not going to be a trial so you might as well forget about me and concentrate on someone you can help."
"How do you expect there not to be a trial when you were found with the murder weapon in hand in the middle of eight corpses."
"Commander, you don't want to get involved in this. Just forget about me and this whole incident."
"That's impossible."
"It's healthier."
"Is that a threat?"
"No, unfortunately, it's a fact." Miller said quietly. "There's a lot you don't know, and will never have the security clearance to know. Just walk away."
"I can't do that."
"I'm afraid you won't have a choice. You seem like a pretty good guy, and your record stands for itself. My CO wouldn't have requested you if you weren't that good."
"Your CO requested me--doesn't that seem like it should tell you your commanding officer thinks that there will be a trial?"
Miller shook his head. "Nah, Ri was just covering all the bases in case things got held up in red tape."
"Ri? Major Riley Finn"
"You know the answer to that so why ask?"
"Were you under orders --"
"Commander Rabb, just let this go."
"There are eight dead bodies at the morgue that clearly tell me I can't let this go, Captain!" Harm growled.
"No, there's not." Miller said confidently.
"Uh, Sir,"
"What is it, Mac?" Harm sighed.
"Captain Miller's release papers. Charges dismissed."
"Just let it go, Commander. Please." Miller said before putting his pager in his pocket and calmly walking out the interrogation room.
Harmon Rabb frowned. "Mac?"
"The bodies melted. A specialized hazmat team from the strike force Miller is assigned to cleaned the morgue. The murder weapon is gone. The only witness has moved to Canada."
"You're kidding?"
She shook her head. "We're under orders to forget this ever happened. Straight from the Joint Chiefs."
Harm's frown deepened just what the hell was Captain Miller involved in and how high up did it go? He just couldn't let this go, but he would be quiet about his interest for now.
